Coonor or Ooty? Which is the best place to stay in Nilgiris
One of the most visited Hill Stations in Tamil Nadu, the Nilgiris categories itself as the best place to relax and rejuvenate. Ooty is the largest hill station in Nilgiris District and Coonor is 20 kms from Ooty towards Coimbatore.
Having visited multiple time to these cities, I here list why its better to stay in Coonor than in Ooty.
1)Less Crowded
Less Traffic
The very purpose of visit is to avoid bustling noisy city life. In all the 3 visits have experienced less traffic, less pollution-both human and nature and less noise at Coonor.
2)Budget Accommodation

The hotels are reasonable even during tourist season compared to Ooty and they are well maintained too. Some of the hotels are located close to important landmarks like the one we stayed. It was close to Sim's park which is one the important place.

3)Toy train Starting point
Coonor Railway Station
One of the most sought attraction and must do is the UNESCO HERITAGE, TOY TRAIN travel in the Nilgiris. The morning train leaves Coonor close to 8AM. Though we waited from 6.30 AM to get the tickets, folks who came at 7.45 AM also ended up in our train and seats were empty when we left too. It completely contradicts at the Ooty station.

4)Less commercial activity
The city is set in a quiet background with comparatively less commercial activity than in Ooty. The hotels are distributed and near to places of interest. The commutation charges are also less.
5)More cleaner and greener
Tea Plantation
Since less commercial activity, it has a direct impact on the nature. The city is clean and has lots of greenery. The tea plantations form major cultivation here and offer visitors to venture into plantations.
I would recommend a day's trip in Ooty by travelling in the morning train from Coonor. The day's trip in Ooty can be done in a cab depending on the number of people. Only thing we might miss in Coonor is the Lake which will be crowded nevertheless in Ooty.
An addition to the list for adventure seekers ,is the Black Thunder Amusement Park can be reached early from Coonor.
