Cancun Day 2
It was a packed day today as the travel was to the other state, Yucatan. We were picked up early from the stay and first pit stop was near the state border. The tour had visit to Cenotes too and first stop was a visit to Cenote.
The cenotes are fascinating to see – formed by sinkholes in the limestone formations. They played a pivotal point in the existence of the city and the reason that the Maya tribe settled there. The name comes from Chi, meaning ‘mouths’ in Mayan, and Chen, meaning ‘wells’. Itza is the name of the Maya tribe that settled there.
You could swim in the Cenotes and water there was pristine and you could see the well bed. Post that, there was lunch. Our next stop was Chichen Itza.
Chichen Itza was an ancient Mayan city, which is one of the New Seven Wonders of the World and one of the most incredible places you can go in Mexico. The highlight is the impressive Temple of Kukulkan, which was built to honor a Mayan feathered serpent god. Each side of the pyramid has 91 stairs, so 364 stairs in total from 4 sides (91 *4) and one common stair in the top. So, total 365 stairs, which represents each day in the solar calendar. If you really want to witness something phenomenal, , visit in March or September during the annual equinoxes. At sunset, a play of light and shadow creates the eerie effect of a snake gradually slithering down the staircase. Scientists recently discovered this pyramid actually has two more pyramids inside it.
The Temple Of The Warriors is another impressive structure at Chichen Itza. Some of the 200 columns on the south side depict warriors in bas-relief.
After spending quality time at Chichen Itza, we left to Cancun. We visited some main square part of the Valladolid town on the way . There was a nice park and old church. We then left to Cancun and reached my stay at around 9 PM. I crashed to bed after a long tiring day.
