Mexico City Day 2
I had not booked any day trips and so went to Amigo Tours which was near to the stay . The reviews and suggestions by fellow travellers made me choose this and they were not proven wrong. I had decided I will do the Teotihuacan, but was unsure about the next one. Either Puebla or Volcano hike. I chose later, booked the tour in the office and went to hostel again for breakfast.
The hostel had free walking tour and I decided to enrol for the same. It was for 4 hours and walking was intense. We first went to Hospital de Jesús Nazareno which was a hospital founded in 1500 AD and still functioning. The murals inside the hospital were intriguing and guide explained what they conveyed. Next was walk towards the Zocala which is the central downtown. En-route he recommended to try pork in one of the small restaurant where they were still marinating the meat.
We passed Palacio Nacional, Catedral Metropolitana and then Templo Mayor Museum which was actually a temple dedicated to Rain , Agriculture gods. The neighbourhood is a happening place where artists dressed like Mayans and Aztecs offer tourist photo opportunities and also bless them with their own prayers. Guess its not free though. Also, the army was preparing for some procession in the area to mark some important movement.
Then we visited Secretariat of Education department which was a federal government building. Next went to a restaurant serving best pizzas in the town. The restaurant had nice ambiance with murals , open theatre and museum too. We then went to a post office which was supposedly the most beautiful post office in the world. Took some snaps and headed to Palace of Fine arts. The guide explained what they exhibit and showed us roof top restaurant from where view of the arts building looks spectacular during sunset.
All were famishing, so the guide took us to restaurant to have the obvious. Tacos!
We were greeted with Passion fruit and Pineapple juice and fortunately there were vegetarian options. I took tacos and tostada. The walking tour was done and we could either explore on our own or head back to hostel.
I went to National Palace which is the seat of federal executive of Mexico. You had to submit any original ID proof and collect it at the exit. Photography was allowed inside . At the main stairwell, city's history is depicted in the form of mural. Outside there were hawkers and mini markets. I just strolled for some time and headed to hostel. I prepared dinner and called it a day.
